When to Merge vs Split PDFs
Two of the most common PDF tasks are combining files into one and extracting pages from an existing document.
Merge when you need to:
- Combine multiple reports into a single packet
- Attach appendices or supporting documents to a main file
- Assemble scan batches into one document
- Collect signed pages from different sources
Split when you need to:
- Extract a few relevant pages from a long document
- Separate a multi-part PDF into individual sections
- Remove pages you don’t need
- Pull out a specific chapter or section for sharing
One tool for both tasks
The PDF Merger & Splitter handles both operations in a single interface. Switch between Merge and Split mode using the toggle at the top of the page.
How to Merge PDFs
Step 1: Open the Tool in Merge Mode
Go to mergram.com/tools/pdf-merger-splitter. The tool opens in Merge PDFs mode by default.
Step 2: Add Your Files
Drag and drop your PDF files onto the upload area, or click Browse to select them. You can add multiple files at once. Each file is listed with its name and page count.
Step 3: Arrange the Order
Drag files in the list to reorder them. The merged PDF combines pages from each file in the order shown. A summary below the list shows the total file count and total pages.
Check the order before merging
Review the file list carefully. The first file in the list becomes the first pages of the merged PDF. If you’re assembling a report, make sure the cover page file is at the top.
Step 4: Merge and Download
Click Merge & Download. The tool combines all pages into a single PDF and downloads it as merged.pdf. A summary below the file list shows the total file count and total pages.
To remove a file from the list, click the remove button next to it. You can also add more files at any time before merging.
How to Split PDFs
Step 1: Switch to Split Mode
Click the Split PDF tab at the top of the tool to switch modes.
Step 2: Upload a PDF
Drag and drop or browse for a single PDF file. The tool loads the file and displays a thumbnail grid showing every page.
Step 3: Select Pages to Extract
By default, all pages are selected. Click individual page thumbnails to toggle selection:
- Selected pages (highlighted) — will be included in the output
- Deselected pages (dimmed) — will be excluded
Use this to pick only the pages you need from a long document.
Step 4: Download Extracted Pages
Click Download Selected. The tool extracts only the selected pages and saves them as a new PDF file (split.pdf). The button shows the count of selected pages. The original file is not modified.
Split, then merge
Need to rearrange pages from a single PDF? Split it first to extract the pages you want, then switch to Merge mode to combine them in your preferred order.
Tips for Working with Multiple PDFs
- Name files clearly before merging — The merged PDF takes the page order from the file list. Descriptive filenames like
01-cover.pdf,02-report.pdf,03-appendix.pdfhelp you arrange files correctly. - Check page counts — The file list shows the page count for each PDF. Use this to verify that no file is missing or duplicated before merging.
- Split large documents before sharing — Instead of sending a 50-page PDF, extract the 3 relevant pages. It’s faster for recipients and avoids confusion.
- Compress after merging — If your merged PDF is large, use the PDF Compressor to reduce the file size. Compressing once after merging is more effective than compressing individual files first.
- Remove password protection first — Both merge and split require unprotected PDFs. If your file is password-protected, unlock it in your PDF reader before uploading.
Privacy and Security
The PDF Merger & Splitter processes everything in your browser. Your files never leave your device — there is no server upload, no cloud processing, and no retained copies. You can use it with sensitive documents like contracts, invoices, and legal filings.
